A poorly constructed story

Posted : 5 months ago on 14 November 2023 05:33 (A review of The Amazing Digital Circus)

It represents all the problems that modern animation has today, and some old mainstream series. One-dimensional characters, cliché plot, absurd and childish humor, incoherent dialogues, the character designs have no correlation with the atmosphere of the series, over-exaggerate moments and add chase for padding, and to add to that, the plot device of glitches of the universe that Pibsy, Marvel, and many other series have used, and as usually happens in these types of cases, it is disruptive with the entire theme of the series itself.

It also uses many elements from different web series that are already overexploited and combines them to make an indissoluble mixture. Except for Pomni and Caine, the design of the other characters has little or no relation to the circus theme. The same settings or the places where they meet seem more typical of a castle than a circus itself. The fact that it has Digital in the name does not justify the fact that the meaning of the word Circus is lost. At the same time, it is important to take into account using your own ideas so that they can be correctly consolidated within one plot or another, in Instead of using the same overexploited ideas of glitches in the universe, broken reality, which in general, almost all the series that use it make the mistake that it does not have any type of justification, and becomes somewhat monotonous, cliché, as long as adding a little cheap action or drama without making a more inventive and better written plot.

I already mentioned the Flanderization thing. Well, the truth is that there are more problems than that. I certainly consider it a typical defect of cartoons to use these types of techniques to make simpler plots, however, the problem here is more serious, given that they use basic character archetypes to be described with a single or two words. By doing this the characters completely lose their humanity and are based on one or two emotions throughout the story with generally zero development. In addition to falling into a state of amnesia with no viable logical explanation, the protagonist's attitude is totally unreal, the same with her circus companions who are over-simplified, using pre-written dialogues without giving them life.

If this is the so-called future of indie animation, Well, I feel very disappointed.
